At the end of season 2, Ben told michael to follow an exact bearing as well...perhaps that's the only way to get on/off the island?
I agree with cjojojo to an extent. I think that those bearings are the only way SAFELY on and off the island. It can't be the ONLY way on and off because the black rock, Danielles ship, Desmonds boat and flight 815 all ended up on the island. Unless, all those other vessels were brought specifically to the island.
